The violence reportedly erupted after a wave of kidnappings between Bedouin and Druze factions. Sunday’s clashes left at least 30 people dead and more than 100 wounded, including women and children. On Monday, a new ambush on the outskirts of Sweida killed six Syrian soldiers and injured others, with several taken hostage by unidentified gunmen.

The Ministry of Interior announced a security crackdown, pledging to recover kidnapped civilians and dismantle lawless groups. Local media cited significant reinforcements being deployed to the region.

Damascus Vows Coordination With Local Leaders

Defense Minister Merhaf Abu Qasra instructed troops to protect civilians and preserve both public and private property. He emphasized coordination with community elders to prevent further escalation.

While the government blames “lawless groups” for the violence, opposition sources accuse regime forces of failing to protect residents or mediate long-standing grievances. The region, predominantly Druze, has historically had strained ties with Damascus and experienced intermittent unrest.

The Ministry of Defense reiterated its intent to restore security and warned that those violating the law will be held accountable.
