Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has called for the creation of a joint aerial defense shield with Poland and European allies, saying cooperation is essential to counter Russia’s missile and drone barrages. Speaking via video link to the Warsaw Security Forum, he stressed that Ukraine’s battlefield experience could anchor a regional security system.
Zelenskyy proposed a “fully reliable shield” covering Poland, Ukraine and other NATO frontline states. He argued that Ukraine has proven it can counter diverse aerial threats, but regional integration would multiply capabilities. His pitch coincided with discussions about a NATO “drone wall,” designed to detect, track and intercept incursions across the eastern flank. (AP News)
German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius told delegates that Europe’s and Ukraine’s defense industries “must work together more closely and effectively.” He noted the EU should loosen regulatory frameworks to accelerate joint arms production. But he cautioned that a fully integrated shield would take years to realize.
Polish officials welcomed Zelenskyy’s initiative, saying it aligns with their plan for advanced radar and anti-drone systems along the border. Politico reported that regional leaders framed it as part of NATO’s shift toward permanent deterrence measures. (Politico)
Zelenskyy emphasized that Russia’s airspace violations over Poland and the Baltics show the urgency of collective action. Al Jazeera highlighted that the Warsaw forum also addressed Europe’s dependence on U.S. defense systems and the need for more indigenous production. Analysts warned that while political momentum is building, funding and coordination remain obstacles
