U.S. President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that a ceasefire in Gaza may be reached “sometime next week,” as he prepares to host Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Washington for high-level talks.
Speaking before departing the White House for Florida, Trump said, “We hope [a ceasefire] is going to happen, and we’re looking for it to happen sometime next week.” The remark came amid U.S. efforts to broker an end to the fighting in Gaza, where ceasefire talks have remained elusive amid ongoing hostilities.
Trump also confirmed that discussions with Netanyahu would cover the ceasefire effort as well as Iran, referring to the U.S.-Israeli military campaign as a “great success” in curbing Tehran’s influence.
Netanyahu, confirming his upcoming trip to Washington, said he would meet not only with Trump but also Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, and other senior figures including Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and special envoy Steve Witkoff.
"We have several items to close beforehand in order to reach the trade agreement and several additional matters," Netanyahu said, hinting at security and economic coordination.
He also noted meetings with members of Congress and the Senate as part of a broader diplomatic push.
The expected meetings come amid renewed global pressure to halt the war in Gaza, where Israeli operations and retaliatory attacks have continued for months. Trump has faced criticism for lack of progress in ceasefire mediation, while Netanyahu’s government is under international scrutiny over civilian casualties.
With a potential ceasefire in sight, the Washington talks could mark a turning point in U.S.-Israel coordination on both Gaza and Iran policy.
