July 01, 2025Clash Report
On the morning of July 1, 2025, the SAF's air defenses successfully intercepted and repelled several drones attempting to strike the Merowe airbase, a key military facility in Northern Sudan. Local residents in Al-Dabba reported hearing loud anti-aircraft fire during the early hours of the attack.
The RSF has increasingly utilized drone warfare throughout 2025, targeting both military bases and civilian areas. This shift in tactics has intensified the conflict, particularly in northern, central, and eastern Sudan, with drones reaching previously secure regions.
In response to escalating RSF threats, particularly following their advance into key areas such as Al-Muthallath and Karab Al-Toum in June, the SAF has reinforced its positions in Northern State. This tactical move is seen as a preemptive effort to defend against further RSF advances.
The Merowe base has significant strategic value. It was initially seized by RSF forces in April 2023, triggering one of the first major confrontations. The SAF later regained control of the facility, but tensions have remained high.
The use of drones by the RSF, combined with their public threats and military advances, signals a calculated effort to destabilize the northern regions of Sudan, which had previously remained relatively stable. This escalation poses grave security and humanitarian risks for civilians.
