Russian missile attack on Ukraine
A missile attack launched by Russian forces struck an industrial site in central Sumy on Monday, causing widespread damage to surrounding residential areas and a local hospital. According to acting Sumy Mayor Artem Kobzar, the strike injured at least 28 people, with four children among the wounded.
Regional Governor Volodymyr Artiukh reported that the missile hit a densely populated area, damaging several high-rise buildings and a school. In a video message from the attack site, Artiukh described the extent of the destruction, noting that children were in a shelter when the missile struck. Footage from the scene showed thick black smoke rising above burning debris, shattered windows, and a damaged residential building.
Sumy, located just 30 km (18.6 miles) from the Russian border, has faced relentless drone and missile attacks throughout the war. Monday’s strike is the latest in a series of assaults targeting civilian infrastructure in the region. Ukrainian officials have repeatedly warned of escalating attacks on cities near the border as Russian forces intensify pressure on northeastern Ukraine.
Sumy has remained a focal point of Russian missile and drone attacks since the full-scale invasion began. The region, which saw early fighting in 2022, continues to suffer from near-daily bombardments, raising concerns over civilian casualties and infrastructure destruction. With no signs of de-escalation, residents in the area remain under constant threat from aerial attacks.
