Ukraine has yet to confirm its attendance at peace talks with Russia set for June 2 in Istanbul, demanding to first receive a formal document outlining Moscow’s proposals.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha stated that Kyiv will not decide on attending the Istanbul peace talks until it receives a written memorandum from Russian negotiators. Speaking at a joint press conference in Kyiv alongside Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, Sybiha emphasized that "in order for the next planned meeting to be substantive and meaningful, it is important to receive a document in advance."

Despite Russia’s invitation and the growing urgency to engage in diplomacy, Sybiha said Ukraine had not yet seen any formal proposals. "We want to end this war this year, and we are interested in establishing a truce, whether it is for 30 days, or for 50 days, or for 100 days," he added.

U.S. Pushes for Progress

The talks come amid renewed U.S. pressure on both sides to pursue peace, with former President Donald Trump urging Kyiv and Moscow to cooperate. According to Trump’s envoy Keith Kellogg, the expectation is that the June 2 meeting will take place.

Ukraine is seeking further U.S. military assistance, while Russia hopes that Trump will support lifting some sanctions. Both governments are under political pressure to show engagement in resolving the conflict.

Turkey Offers Diplomatic Platform

Turkey, which hosted earlier discussions between Russia and Ukraine, has reiterated its willingness to serve as a mediator. Hakan Fidan, who also recently visited Moscow, said, “as long as [the sides] remain at the negotiating table, progress can surely be seen.”

If the upcoming talks proceed, Turkish officials hope to facilitate a high-level summit involving Trump, Russian President Vladimir Putin, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy.
