An explosion near the U.S. Kadena Air Base in Okinawa injured four Japanese Self-Defense Force personnel on Monday during preparations for bomb disposal, prompting an immediate investigation by defense officials.
According to the Japanese Defense Ministry, the blast took place at an SDF storage facility for unexploded ordnance located within the ammunition depot area near the base. The injured personnel suffered minor finger lacerations and possible hearing damage as they were preparing for bomb disposal operations.
Authorities emphasized that the incident posed no broader danger to the surrounding area. No evacuation orders were issued for local residents, and officials confirmed there was no further risk of explosion or fire following the blast.
Kadena Air Base is the largest U.S. military installation in the Asia-Pacific region and has long been a focal point in the security dynamics of the region. Okinawa, where the base is located, continues to host the majority of U.S. military assets stationed in Japan, despite public pushback and local sensitivities dating back to its post-WWII U.S. administration until 1972.
