July 15, 2025Clash Report
In a brief official statement, Mali’s armed forces reported that a patrol had encountered and engaged a “terrorist group” between the towns of Kidal and Anefis. According to the army’s communication office, operations were ongoing, and the enemy had been "energetically pushed back."
In contrast, the FLA claimed a “clear victory” over Malian and Russian troops, publishing images purportedly showing destroyed military vehicles and seized equipment. RFI, citing military sources, reported that both sides sustained casualties, though no independent verification was available.
The fighting follows the deployment last week of a large military convoy from southern Mali to the Kidal region, composed of Malian troops and Russian Africa Corps fighters. Their mission reportedly includes resupplying army positions and installing newly appointed military commanders in the area.
Northern Mali remains volatile, with the army facing a dual threat from both jihadist groups like JNIM and separatist movements such as the FLA. The proximity to Algeria and the historical tension surrounding Azawad autonomy continue to complicate security dynamics.
Analysts warn that these confrontations may escalate if political dialogue with Tuareg factions remains stalled.
