According to Danko-Wasagu district administrator Husaini Bena, Nigerian troops ambushed a large convoy of armed individuals moving through several villages. The initial ground engagement escalated into a two-hour firefight, forcing the attackers to retreat. As they fled, the Nigerian air force conducted targeted strikes that caused heavy casualties.
Bena stated, “More than 150 bandits were killed during this operation.” AbdulRahman Zagga, security director for the Kebbi governor’s office, also confirmed the assault and said the forces faced around 400 armed individuals. Although he declined to give precise figures, he described the outcome as a major success.
Northwestern and central Nigerian states have been plagued by violent groups operating in remote, often ungoverned territories. These groups are frequently involved in kidnappings, extortion, and raids on rural communities.
Just days earlier, at least 40 members of a self-defense group were killed in an attack on a village in Plateau State, further underscoring the deteriorating security environment. The Nigerian army has intensified operations to retake control of affected regions, though challenges remain in sustaining long-term stability.
