“Azerbaijan, despite all its efforts and its attempts to preserve good-neighborly relations with Iran, has seen Iran violate international principles of neighborly relations and openly breach Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity and sovereignty. This incident constitutes a direct act of aggression and, under international law, gives Azerbaijan the right to respond to Iran in kind.”

These remarks were made by South Azerbaijani political analyst Saleh Kamrani in a statement to Clash Report.

Speaking about the background of Iran’s UAV attack on Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, Kamrani noted that Tehran’s attitude toward Baku has always been characterized by arrogance.

“Why is Iran taking such a step? In fact, this incident is a manifestation of the very nature of the Iranian regime and Iranian statehood. At critical moments like this, that nature reveals itself more openly. Even from a philosophical and theoretical perspective, this can be explained. A system built upon Persian nationalism displays its internal nature and reflexes in precisely this way during moments of tension. Under current conditions, the Iranian regime is trying to expand the conflict in order to increase the cost of the war at both the regional and global levels. In other words, it intends to widen the geographical scope of the war.”

Kamrani added that a similar scenario that recently occurred involving Turkey suggests that Iran is seeking to broaden the scale of the conflict across the region.

“The same happened with Turkey. An attack allegedly launched by mistake was intercepted by NATO defense systems, but at the same time there were claims that Cyprus was also struck. This indicates the risk that events could spread into a broader regional framework. Iran’s main objective is to extend the conflict throughout the region. By creating tensions across a wide geographical area—from the Middle East to the Caucasus and even the Balkans—it seeks to trigger serious price increases in the global economy. At the same time, taking into account the approaching midterm elections in the United States, Iran aims to weaken the political base of Donald Trump and provoke public dissatisfaction within America.”

According to Iran’s calculations, such pressure could influence the course of the war.

“In this context, Azerbaijan is being tested. Azerbaijan’s reaction is extremely important. If Azerbaijan does not respond firmly and decisively, Iran may repeat such aggressive actions. In my view, the main objective here is both to test Azerbaijan and to take tactical steps within the framework of a broader strategy to expand the war. Therefore, I cannot rule out the possibility that Iran will continue its activities in this direction.”
