Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Russia has launched more than 3,500 drones, nearly 190 missiles, and some 2,500 glide bombs against Ukraine this month. He warned that Russian drones have also crossed into Poland and Romania, stressing the need for a joint European air defense shield to counter what he called “aerial terror.”

Civilian Impact in Zaporizhzhia and Mykolaiv

Overnight strikes on Zaporizhzhia left 13 people injured, including two children, and caused heavy damage to residential buildings and private homes. Emergency services reported fires breaking out across multiple sites, including an auto service station. In Mykolaiv region, one person was killed when a drone struck what Zelenskyy described as “an ordinary farm.” Officials said rescue efforts continue as communities face mounting destruction.

Drone Incursions into NATO Airspace

Zelenskyy said Russian drones have violated the airspace of Poland and Romania, calling them provocations against Ukraine’s partners. Polish officials confirmed they have shot down drones in their territory in recent days, while Romania lodged diplomatic protests. The incidents highlight the risk of spillover and underscore NATO’s need to address cross-border threats more systematically.

Call for European Sky Shield

In his address, Zelenskyy urged Europe to move beyond ad-hoc responses and adopt a multi-layered air defense system across the continent. He argued that the technology for integrated protection already exists, but that investment and political will are lagging. Several European countries have pledged to expand collective defense under the so-called Sky Shield initiative, though Kyiv says progress is far slower than the pace of Russian strikes.
