The United States has deported the first group of Iranians following a rare coordination deal with Tehran. About 100 people were flown on a U.S.-chartered plane, transiting through Qatar before heading to Iran. Iranian officials said this marked the beginning of a broader plan that could see up to 400 nationals returned.

First Group Sent Via Qatar

A U.S. official confirmed that the first chartered plane departed from Louisiana on Tuesday, with its passengers later transferred to a Tehran-bound flight in Qatar. Iranian authorities stated that the group included individuals who had crossed the U.S. border illegally, mainly via Mexico.

Tehran’s Position and Future Returns

An Iranian Foreign Ministry official insisted the process was “a consular matter,” stressing it was not linked to wider political negotiations. He added that Washington “plans to deport around 400 Iranians,” with the first batch of 120 expected in the immediate days ahead. More flights are anticipated once logistical arrangements are finalized.

Rights Concerns Over Deportations

The move has triggered concerns from rights groups and immigration advocates, who warn that returning people to Iran may expose them to persecution. Observers highlighted that U.S. authorities must ensure access to asylum procedures and respect the principle of non-refoulement, which bars returning individuals to potential harm.
