Meloni said the attempt to breach Israel’s naval blockade could “provide a pretext” to disrupt a fragile peace process linked to a U.S.-backed plan. Italy confirmed its naval frigate shadowing the flotilla would soon issue a radio call offering participants a chance to turn back before entering high-risk waters. The defence ministry added that its escort would end 150 nautical miles from Gaza’s coast, leaving the convoy exposed.
Activists Stress Nonviolence
The Global Sumud Flotilla, comprising some 50 vessels, has pledged strict nonviolent resistance if stopped. “Our message is focused on humanitarian safety. We are not here for confrontation at all,” said Abdullah Mubarak Al-Mutawa, a Kuwaiti participant. Organizers said they would wear life jackets, avoid provocation, and pursue legal action at the International Criminal Court if detained or attacked.
Humanitarian Mission And Global Support
The flotilla, which includes parliamentarians, lawyers, and prominent activists such as Swedish campaigner Greta Thunberg, set sail from Italy with medical supplies aimed at breaking Israel’s 18-year blockade. Activists argue that preventing delivery of aid amounts to “theft in international waters” and warn that forced removal to Israel would be considered kidnapping under international law
