The Russian paramilitary group involved, the Africa Corps—considered a successor to Wagner operations in the region—has increased its presence in Mali over recent months. Deployed at the request of Mali’s junta government, Africa Corps personnel operate alongside Malian forces in counterinsurgency missions. Ténenkou, situated in central Mopti, has been a hotspot of jihadist activity for years, and recent months have seen a surge in rebel offensives targeting military convoys and outposts.
Local reports indicate that JNIM militants used roadside bombs and automatic weapons during the ambush, which took place on a strategic supply route. Some sources suggest that multiple Russian mercenaries were killed, though official figures have not been released by Bamako or Moscow. Malian military authorities have acknowledged the attack but provided no casualty details.
Regional Security Deteriorates Amid Foreign Withdrawal
The incident reflects broader instability in Mali and across the Sahel, where al-Qaeda and Islamic State affiliates continue to exploit security vacuums left by the withdrawal of French and UN forces. The Malian junta, in power since 2021, has pivoted towards Russian military assistance, sidelining Western partners and drawing criticism from rights groups over abuses linked to foreign mercenary activity.
Tensions between JNIM and foreign-backed forces have grown sharper in recent weeks, with the group expanding its reach into southern and western parts of Mali. Analysts warn that the increasing reliance on foreign contractors may escalate the conflict further, especially in contested zones like Mopti and Gao.
