The United States has withdrawn its forces from the Al-Tanf military base in southern Syria, located at the strategic junction of the Syrian, Iraqi, and Jordanian borders. Following the withdrawal, Syrian government forces took over the base and deployed troops in the area, according to Syrian official sources.
Syrian Army Assumes Control of Al-Tanf
According to information reported by Anadolu Agency, Syrian army units entered Al-Tanf shortly after the US withdrawal and formally took control of the facility. The base has long been regarded as a key strategic point due to its location along vital regional transit routes and its role during the Syrian conflict.
US Forces Redeploy to Jordan’s Tower 22 Base
Sources indicated that US troops withdrew from Al-Tanf and redeployed to the Tower 22 base, located inside Jordanian territory. The distance between Syria’s Al-Tanf base and Jordan’s Tower 22 base is approximately 22 kilometers. While Al-Tanf previously hosted around 200 US soldiers at certain periods, there is no confirmed data regarding the number of US troops currently stationed at Tower 22.
Strategic Role of Al-Tanf Base
The United States had expanded the Al-Tanf base in 2017 and 2018, enhancing its surveillance capabilities. Observation balloons deployed at the base were used to monitor military movements across hundreds of kilometers between the Jordanian border and the Euphrates River. These activities focused on tracking operations by Iran-backed groups and the Islamic State (ISIS).
The transfer of control to Syrian government forces is expected to have implications for the military balance and security dynamics in southern Syria in the period ahead.
