On February 3, 2026, the US military announced it shot down an Iranian Shahed-139 unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) as it approached the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln in the Arabian Sea with “unclear intent” and an aggressive flight pattern, according to US Central Command. The drone was intercepted by an F-35C fighter jet launched from the carrier in what US officials described as a self-defense measure to protect the vessel and its crew.

Military spokespeople stressed that no US personnel were injured and no equipment was damaged in the encounter, despite the drone’s close approach. The incident occurred in international waters amid an ongoing US naval buildup in the region.

Iran’s Response and Media Accounts

Iranian state and semi-official media acknowledged losing contact with an unmanned aerial vehicle in international waters, asserting it had been on a routine mission and had successfully transmitted its imagery back to base before communications were lost. Iranian authorities did not confirm it had been shot down.

Maritime Incident in the Strait of Hormuz

Hours after the drone shootdown, the US military reported a separate maritime encounter in the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz. According to US statements, Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) fast boats and a Mohajer drone approached the US-flagged Stena Imperative tanker at high speed, allegedly threatening to board and seize the vessel. A nearby US Navy destroyer, the USS McFaul, responded and escorted the tanker to safety, helping de-escalate the situation.

Iranian officials offered a differing account, claiming the tanker had entered Iranian territorial waters without permission and was warned before leaving; they denied any security breach or hostile maneuver.

Wider Context and Diplomatic Implications

These military confrontations unfold against the backdrop of planned diplomatic engagements between Washington and Tehran over Iran’s nuclear program. Both sides have expressed cautious interest in negotiations, though differences remain over venue and agenda.
