Türkiye plans to increase spending on weapons, ammunition and military systems by 229% in its 2027 budget, as Ankara moves to expand defense procurement amid heightened global security tensions.

The government has earmarked approximately $45 billion for defense and a separate $26 billion for internal security under the proposed spending plan.

Treasury and Finance Minister Mehmet Şimşek announced the increase at the Istanbul Economy Forum, saying Türkiye would continue strengthening its military deterrence as conflicts reshape the global security environment.

Military Procurement Takes Priority

The planned 229% increase applies specifically to purchases of weapons, ammunition and weapons systems, rather than the entire defense budget.

The increase forms part of Ankara's broader effort to expand military capabilities and sustain investment in domestic defense production.

However, the proposed allocations have yet to receive parliamentary approval.

The government is expected to submit its budget proposal to the Turkish Grand National Assembly, where the final spending figures will be determined.

Details of funding for individual procurement programs and defense projects have not yet been disclosed.

Defense Exports Surpass $10 Billion

Türkiye's defense and aerospace exports reached approximately $6.9 billion during the first nine months of 2026, while exports over the preceding 12 months exceeded $10 billion.

Şimşek said Türkiye was approaching the ranks of the world's 10 largest defense exporters, underscoring the growing international presence of Turkish manufacturers.

Export growth has provided an additional source of demand for manufacturers alongside domestic procurement programs.

Parliament to Determine Final Allocations

The 2027 budget process will establish how the government distributes funding between weapons purchases, ongoing development programs and new defense projects.

The proposed increase comes as Ankara seeks to expand domestic military production while maintaining investment in research and development.

Final spending allocations, including funding for individual weapons systems, will become clearer once parliament completes its review of the budget.
