Japan Considering Palantir and Anduril AI to Overhaul Military Decision-Making

Tokyo is evaluating U.S.-developed artificial intelligence platforms from Palantir Technologies and Anduril Industries to modernize its military command. The deployment aims to accelerate combat decision-making and ensure seamless operational integration with American forces.

Tokyo is reviewing the deployment of artificial intelligence platforms developed by U.S. defense contractors Palantir Technologies and Anduril Industries.

The move seeks to overhaul the Self-Defense Force's command-and-control architecture and align its operational speed with American military units.

The government plans to finalize the AI integration strategy before a scheduled year-end revision of three foundational national security documents, according to Nikkei Asia.

Officials view these digital platforms as a core mechanism for modernizing combat capabilities over the next five years.

Bridging the Command Gap

Japan established a Joint Operations Command for its three military branches in 2025 to deepen coordination with U.S. deployments in the Pacific region.

However, a stark disparity in decision-making speeds currently threatens to fracture joint operations.

American forces integrated artificial intelligence into their command structures significantly earlier than their Japanese counterparts.

The SDF currently operates without any AI-assisted command-and-control architecture.

To eliminate this friction, Tokyo is examining Palantir's Maven Smart System alongside Anduril's Lattice AI platform.

The Defense Ministry envisions deploying specific systems for designated mission profiles, including counterattacks, missile defense, and drone orchestration.

The U.S. military actively utilizes the Maven Smart System to process battlefield intelligence, allowing the software to automatically assign targets and recommend tactical maneuvers.

American forces recently deployed the platform during strikes against Iranian positions.

Advanced AI tools "can turn processes that used to take hours and sometimes even days into seconds," said Adm. Brad Cooper, commander of the U.S. Central Command, in a March video statement.

Navigating AI Sovereignty

Anduril's Lattice platform specializes in fusing data from disparate sensors to construct a unified battlespace picture.

The software can also autonomously network surveillance assets and drones in environments suffering from communications degradation.

Integrating foreign artificial intelligence requires granting these systems access to highly classified Japanese military intelligence.

This operational necessity has raised internal concerns about corporate data access and the functional limitations imposed by overseas developers.

To mitigate intelligence vulnerabilities, Tokyo is proposing a hybrid architecture.

The government intends to build domestic data centers capable of processing vast intelligence streams securely within national borders.

Defense officials are also assessing the deployment of a domestically engineered command center to govern the American platforms.

This localized oversight mechanism would dictate which U.S. system engages during specific operational scenarios.

Domestic Oversight Architecture

Tokyo-based Sakana AI has emerged as a primary candidate to develop this sovereign oversight function.

The company's Sakana Fugu model, introduced in June, is designed to orchestrate multiple distinct AI platforms across various operational domains.

The firm already holds a working contract with a Defense Ministry agency. Government strategists believe that utilizing a localized model like Sakana Fugu could enable autonomous military operations without complete dependence on American software.

Despite strong institutional momentum for absolute technological sovereignty, defense planners concede that immediate reliance on U.S. platforms remains unavoidable to rapidly scale military readiness.

Questions persist regarding the technical interoperability between American tactical software and Japanese oversight architecture.

Maintaining domestic AI at a standard capable of fully exploiting the U.S. platforms may inadvertently hinder Tokyo's long-term objective of completely replacing the foreign systems.
