The Israeli government on Wednesday approved a $1.5 billion plan to increase production of Merkava tanks and armored vehicles, including the Namer and Eitan models, in a move Israeli media linked directly to ongoing war efforts in Gaza. Defense Minister Yisrael Katz presented the program, which totals more than 5 billion shekels, as essential to replenishing armored stocks and sustaining battlefield operations. The announcement came one day after Katz signed off on a parallel military plan that envisions the occupation of Gaza City and the mobilization of tens of thousands of reservists.
Military Expansion And Gaza Offensive
The tank and APC production push is framed by officials as preparation for deeper incursions into Gaza. Israeli leaders have argued the plan will enable operations aimed at disarming Hamas, removing its leadership, and creating a buffer zone to secure nearby Israeli communities. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office stressed that Israel’s policy remained unchanged, insisting the release of Israeli hostages remained contingent on meeting conditions set by the national security cabinet.
Diplomatic Efforts And Hamas Position
The production decision unfolded alongside regional diplomatic activity, as Qatar and Egypt mediated efforts to establish a 60-day ceasefire and prisoner exchange. Hamas has reportedly agreed to discuss the proposal as an initial step toward broader negotiations. Despite these talks, Netanyahu reaffirmed that military pressure would continue until all hostages are freed and security conditions are achieved.
