Iranian Missile Arsenal Proves Resilient Despite Months of US, Israeli Bombardment

Months of intensive U.S. and Israeli airstrikes targeting subterranean complexes have failed to eliminate Tehran's long-range strike capability, as Iranian forces continue executing precision ballistic attacks against American garrisons in the Middle East.

A series of deadly strikes against Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Jordan, which claimed the lives of three U.S. servicemembers, underscores Tehran's capacity to maintain operational missile infrastructure despite sustained air campaigns.

Subterranean Repair

Engineers in Iran have unsealed and reconstructed access networks at subterranean complexes heavily damaged during joint bombardments in March and April.

Commercial satellite analysis reveals that engineering crews north of Kermanshah cleared debris, repaired cratered roads, and reopened collapsed tunnel access points within weeks of heavy strikes.

Jim Lamson, a visiting research fellow at King’s College London and former Central Intelligence Agency analyst, noted the speed of Tehran's recovery efforts.

“They can go after the tunnel entrances, but as we’ve seen, the Iranians can take those out with their engineering teams relatively quickly and get back to operations,” he said.

Penetrating Regional Defense Networks

The recent barrage in Jordan, marking Tehran's fourth attack on U.S. personnel in five days, utilized advanced weaponry, including the solid-fueled, satellite-guided Kheibar Shekan medium-range ballistic missile.

Footage released by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps highlights a broader array of deployed systems, encompassing Fattah, Zolfaghar, Fateh-110, and Qiam ballistic missiles alongside Shahed drones and Paveh cruise missiles.

Military analysts suggest Iranian projectiles are increasingly bypassing U.S. air defense coverage, partly due to prior strikes against regional radar arrays and air-defense infrastructure.

Tom Karako, a missile expert at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, pointed to Tehran's long-term preparation for conflict with Washington.

“The Iranians, having watched decades of how America fights, have built an overall infrastructure that is designed to ride out” a war with the U.S., he said.

Strategic Pressures

The persistent launches directly challenge political assertions that Tehran's strategic arsenal was rendered inoperative during earlier phases of the campaign.

Questioned during a Senate Appropriations Committee hearing regarding claims that the threat had been obliterated, U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth acknowledged the reality of Iran's ongoing output.

“We never expected they would stop having capabilities to shoot. The question is at scale against an opponent like the United States of America,” Hegseth said.

Tehran's strategic posture aims to raise the material cost of Washington's military deployment, leverage regional pressure, and preserve its leverage over critical maritime corridors.

Behnam Ben Taleblu, senior director of the Iran program at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, observed that “Iran’s incremental scorched-earth policy against the Arab world is designed to get America to back out of the region, not to double down.”

With approximately 50,000 U.S. troops deployed across the region, Tehran's ability to reconstitute launch sites and maintain inventory poses an enduring strategic hurdle for Washington.
