The Trump administration "absolutely screwed up" the communications surrounding the release of the Jeffrey Epstein files last year, Vice President JD Vance admitted during a wide-ranging interview on "The Joe Rogan Experience" premiered Wednesday.
Conceding that the administration was "guilty" of mishandling the rollout, Vance identified the episode as a significant political liability that triggered sustained backlash from both the public and congressional Republicans.
The Epstein Fallout
The public disclosure of the documents last year drew heavy criticism over clumsy messaging and puzzling redactions.
Vance acknowledged that the strategy damaged public confidence, pointing directly to remarks made by then-Attorney General Pam Bondi regarding binders of documents on her desk.
"She overstated what we had and what we didn't have," Vance told Rogan, adding that the claims made "people mistrust the entire effort."
While maintaining that the administration was not attempting to conceal information, Vance stated that the U.S. should have released the material as quickly as possible.
Investigators collected 6 million documents in total, with approximately 3 million directly tied to the Epstein estate.
"If people want to say we mishandled the Epstein release, guilty. We did mishandle it, especially the communications of it," Vance said. "We absolutely screwed up the comms of the Epstein files. Like we just did."
Vance expressed a personal belief that an underlying narrative remains uncovered, though he noted a lack of definitive proof. "I'll go to my deathbed believing there's a story there, but I can't prove it," he stated.
Intelligence and Foreign Influence
The vice president explicitly linked Epstein to high-level international intelligence networks, noting deep connections within both American and Israeli political structures.
Specifically, Vance stated that Epstein appeared to be connected to left-of-center elements of the Israeli deep state rather than to right-of-center political factions.
Addressing broader geopolitical dynamics, Vance asserted that certain individuals within the Israeli government are actively attempting to manipulate American public opinion to sustain military campaigns indefinitely without clear objectives.
He cited a recent media report indicating that specific influencers in the U.S. were being compensated to attack diplomatic agreements.
"Israel is losing the public opinion battle in the United States of America. It is a simple and obvious fact," Vance observed, echoing previous public assessments by President Trump.
Vance dismissed alternative theories regarding external leverage over the president, calling the notion that Donald Trump is subject to blackmail "crazy."
He further rejected allegations of personal wrongdoing by Trump, labeling Democratic narratives concerning the president and minors as an "absurd" hoax devoid of credible evidence.
Regional Policy and Domestic Outlook
Turning to Iran, Vance outlined a restrictive approach to military intervention, clarifying that the U.S. will not deploy 150,000 ground troops to force regime change.
He stated that the U.S. military would not assume tasks that belong to the Iranian populace, warning against the destabilizing consequences of massive refugee movements into Europe and the U.S.
"We're not just going to bomb and bomb and bomb," Vance said, emphasizing that the creation of widespread terrorist infrastructure remains a key risk.
On domestic economic and cultural matters, Vance argued that economic policy must ensure that young Americans can own property to prevent socialism from becoming inevitable.
He applied a similar structural warning to the rise of artificial intelligence, noting that while AI will generate vast wealth, failure to distribute that prosperity broadly will lead to communism.
