US Army Secretary Dan Driscoll held confidential discussions with Russian officials in Abu Dhabi as part of the Trump administration’s efforts to mediate a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine. The talks follow initial Geneva meetings aimed at reconciling differences over a proposed 28-point plan to end the conflict.
Abu Dhabi Talks and Diplomatic Coordination
According to Financial Times, Driscoll’s meetings are a continuation of efforts to bridge gaps between US and Ukrainian officials regarding the peace plan. The Russian delegation’s composition remains undisclosed.
The US official, speaking on condition of anonymity, indicated that Driscoll would continue discussions in Abu Dhabi and also meet with Ukrainian representatives. The Kremlin declined to comment on the talks when approached by journalists.
Geneva Talks Set the Stage
Earlier meetings in Geneva, Switzerland, brought together US, Ukrainian, and European delegations to review the 28-point peace proposal. Co-chaired by US Secretary Marco Rubio and Ukrainian Presidential Office Head Andriy Yermak, the talks reportedly took place in a constructive and respectful environment.
A joint statement noted that the delegations achieved “meaningful progress” in aligning positions and determining next steps. Any future agreement will maintain full support for Ukraine’s sovereignty, the statement added.
A Revised Peace Framework
The White House confirmed that negotiators have drafted an updated and improved peace framework. Both Washington and Kyiv plan to continue refining proposals in the coming days, maintaining close coordination with European partners.
According to the joint statement, final decisions on the framework will ultimately be made by the presidents of the United States and Ukraine.
