Ukraine's Fire Point Integrates European Defense Tech for Freyja Missile Network

Ukrainian defense manufacturer Fire Point has begun integrating radar and guidance systems from 13 European partners into its Freyja missile defense program. The pan-European initiative aims to deliver a cost-effective alternative to U.S. Patriot systems by mid-2027.

Ukrainian defense manufacturer Fire Point has initiated the technical integration of radar and guidance components from over a dozen European defense contractors into its Freyja missile defense program.

The Kyiv-based firm secured agreements with 13 industrial partners to construct the pan-European anti-ballistic system.

The initiative formally launched in Paris last month, drawing participation from 10 governments and 12 corporations, including SAAB, Thales, Leonardo, and Eurosam.

"Right now we are in the most intense and also in the most complicated stage of finally assembling everything together with surveillance radars, with tracking radars, with the seekers," Chief Executive Iryna Terekh stated.

Supply Chain Pressures

Ukraine currently utilizes the U.S.-manufactured Patriot platform to counter high-speed Russian ballistic weapons.

However, the system faces severe interceptor shortages globally, a supply constraint exacerbated by the conflict in Iran.

To mitigate this operational exposure, the Freyja program seeks to field an active interceptor by mid-2027.

Developers are utilizing an open-source framework, allowing interchangeable hardware such as swapping a Weibel radar for a SAAB unit.

Participating contractors will fund research and development phases until a minimum viable product is achieved.

Terekh defined this operational milestone as a successful live interception.

European Hardware Integration

The defense network relies on the FP7.X, an accelerated variant of Fire Point’s FP7 ballistic missile. Norwegian firm Kongsberg is developing the command center to network the disparate hardware systems.

Industry reports indicate German manufacturer Diehl Defence will supply the seeker guidance system.

Diehl confirmed ongoing discussions with Fire Point but withheld specifics.

Fire Point targets a unit cost below €1 million for the interceptor, representing a fraction of the Patriot's standard expense.

"We're trying to squeeze a program that usually takes 20 or 30 years into a matter of a couple of years," Terekh noted, confirming five interceptor test flights have occurred.

Launchers will hold four to six missiles. According to Fabian Hoffmann of the Norwegian Institute for Defence Studies, maintaining an industry-standard 95 percent interception probability for a six-missile volley requires a 40 percent hit rate per weapon.

Expanding Arsenal

Beyond defense, an offensive ground-strike variant of the FP7 nears combat readiness.

Following 15 test launches, the Ukrainian Defense Ministry is conducting certification, with operational deployment projected for early autumn.

A larger ballistic weapon, the FP9, is scheduled for late autumn and possesses sufficient range to strike Moscow.

While the FP7 architecture originally derived from Soviet S300 and S400 designs, current iterations retain merely 20 percent structural similarity.

Co-founder Denys Shtilierman disclosed that the original Soviet blueprints were sourced by Timur Mindich, a fugitive in Israel currently facing corruption charges.

Fire Point subsequently rejected Mindich's attempt to purchase corporate equity.

The firm is also manufacturing proprietary engines for its FP5 Flamingo cruise missile, replacing previously scavenged parts.

Initial prototypes are under construction to support expanded production following successful diagnostic trials.
