U.S. President Donald Trump said Israel will halt further strikes on Iran’s South Pars gas field unless Tehran retaliates, following a major escalation that has shaken global energy markets.

Israel’s attack on the South Pars gas field — the Iranian section of the world’s largest natural gas reserve shared with Qatar — marked a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict. The strike sent oil prices higher and raised fears of prolonged disruption to global energy supplies.

Trump described Israel as having “violently lashed out” in response to mounting tensions in the Middle East. While he emphasized that the United States had no prior knowledge of the attack, reports indicated he had approved Israel’s broader strategy targeting Iran’s energy infrastructure.

Iran responded swiftly, launching missile strikes across the Gulf. Targets included Qatar’s Ras Laffan Industrial City, a critical hub that processes roughly one-fifth of the world’s liquefied natural gas supply. QatarEnergy reported extensive damage and large fires at multiple LNG facilities.

Missiles were also fired toward Riyadh, though Saudi Arabia said it intercepted several ballistic threats and thwarted a drone attack on an eastern gas facility. On Thursday, Iran renewed its strikes, again targeting Qatar’s gas infrastructure and Saudi territory.

Trump warned that Israel would refrain from further attacks on South Pars unless Iran escalates. However, he issued a stark threat: if Iran targets Qatar again, the United States could launch a massive strike on the gas field.

He framed Iran’s retaliation as unjustified, claiming Tehran lacked full knowledge of the circumstances surrounding the initial Israeli strike.

The confrontation has intensified concerns over global energy security, particularly as disruptions ripple through key supply chains. The Strait of Hormuz — through which about a fifth of global oil trade passes — remains at risk.

Since the conflict began nearly four weeks ago, Iran has expanded its targets beyond Israel to include U.S. military and diplomatic sites across the region, warning Gulf states against supporting attacks.

With no clear path to de-escalation, Trump is reportedly considering deploying thousands more U.S. troops to the Middle East. Their mission could include securing vital shipping routes and ensuring the continued flow of oil through one of the world’s most critical maritime corridors.
