U.S. President Donald Trump threatened Friday to impose immediate 100 percent tariffs on European countries that implement digital services taxes on American technology corporations.

Writing on his Truth Social platform, Trump stated that the punitive measures would supersede all trade agreements, whether implemented or signed.

Trump views the digital levies as non-tariff barriers to trade that directly hinder U.S. exports.

Trade Deals at Risk

The threat arrives one day after European Union nations greenlit a trade agreement negotiated with the U.S. last year.

That deal caps taxes on European imports at 15 percent.

A European Commission spokesman stated on Friday that the bloc would respond swiftly and decisively to defend its rights and regulatory autonomy.

Franco-British Levies Under Fire

Trump has previously used specific tariff threats against individual European nations to force compliance.

Earlier this month, he threatened a 100 percent tariff on French wine and champagne unless Paris repeals its 3 percent levy on U.S. tech revenues.

The United Kingdom faces similar pressure over its 2 percent digital services tax, which applies to firms with global digital revenues exceeding £500 million.

Trump previously warned London in April that the U.S. could easily address the issue by placing a large tariff on British goods.
