U.S. President Donald Trump has intensified diplomatic and geopolitical turmoil by announcing talks with NATO’s Mark Rutte on Greenland, sharing private texts from French President Emmanuel Macron, posting provocative imagery, and criticising British defence decisions.
Trump and Rutte: Greenland Talks
Trump posted on his Truth Social account that he had a “very good telephone call” with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte about Greenland, agreeing to convene a meeting of relevant parties in Davos, Switzerland. He reiterated that Greenland is “imperative for National and World Security” and insisted “there can be no going back.”
Trump Publishes Rutte’s Private Message
In a rare move, Trump also shared what he said was a private text message sent by Mark Rutte. In the message, the NATO chief appeared to praise Trump’s leadership and signal support during upcoming public engagements.
I will use my media engagements in Davos to highlight your work…
The disclosure of Rutte’s message raised eyebrows among diplomats, given NATO’s traditionally cautious approach to public political alignment.
Macron Text Leak Draws Attention
In a separate post, Trump shared what he said were private messages from French President Emmanuel Macron. In Macron’s communication, the French leader expressed alignment with Trump on issues like Syria and Iran but admitted he did not understand Trump’s Greenland stance. Macron suggested organising a G7-related meeting in Paris later in the week.
Provocative Imagery and Northern Hemisphere Claims
Trump also circulated a widely discussed illustration showing Canada and Greenland under a U.S. flag — a visual that highlights his increasingly assertive tone regarding American influence in the Western Hemisphere.
Also President Trump just posted a photo of the Oval Office with him displaying a map that shows Greenland, Venezuela and Canada as part of the United States of America
U.K. Criticism and Defence Base Dispute
In addition to his Greenland posture, Trump criticised Britain for a defence-related decision involving the Diego Garcia military base in the Indian Ocean, a vital strategic facility for U.S. forces. His comments reflect ongoing frustrations with allies over security and defence priorities.
