Putin Threatens to Seize European Ships Over Shadow Fleet Crackdown

President Vladimir Putin has warned that Moscow will initiate a tit-for-tat campaign to seize European commercial vessels if Western capitals proceed with plans to confiscate Russian cargo ships.

Speaking on Wednesday during naval exercises in Russia's far east, the president outlined a stark escalation in the ongoing maritime sanctions dispute.

He stated that any European attempt to appropriate Russian commercial assets would trigger an immediate and asymmetrical response.

The strategic warning follows mounting efforts by the European Union to disrupt Moscow's covert logistics network.

Brussels has recently expanded its sanctions dragnet to target hundreds of vessels while exploring aggressive maritime enforcement tactics to penalize sanctions evasion.

Putin condemned these potential Western enforcement measures as state-sponsored piracy.

"And if this begins to be put into practice, we shall be forced to respond in kind," Putin stated. "And not necessarily in those waters where raids on our ships and vessels are planned, but wherever we ourselves deem it necessary and appropriate."

Pacific Fleet Posture

Russian military leadership rapidly signaled operational readiness to execute Putin’s mandate.

Pacific Fleet Commander Viktor Liina briefed the president that his naval forces are fully prepared to intercept commercial traffic tied to hostile Western states.

Liina noted that nations like France and Britain actively utilize flags of convenience for their own logistics, effectively operating a Western equivalent to Moscow's shadow fleet.

He confirmed that Russian intelligence has comprehensively mapped maritime traffic across the Asia-Pacific, identifying the routes, ownership, and cargo of vessels linked to adversarial governments.

"We have the capabilities to inspect and detain vessels belonging to unfriendly states and their shadow fleet," Liina said. He added that inter-agency coordination is actively in place to tackle the task.

Mediterranean Flashpoint

The diplomatic friction extends well beyond the Pacific. Moscow's Foreign Ministry simultaneously condemned the EU’s naval presence in the Mediterranean, explicitly targeting Operation EUNAVFOR MED Irini.

Originally established to enforce a United Nations arms embargo on Libya, the operation is now under fire from Moscow for conducting what it terms unlawful inspections.

Tensions flared this month following an Italian-led boarding of a Russian-linked tanker, marking the second such Mediterranean interdiction in under two weeks.

The Russian Foreign Ministry issued a sharp rebuke regarding the European naval maneuvers, cautioning that the bloc is courting severe risk.

"Operation Irini is effectively being used by the European Union to intimidate commercial shipping companies and impede freedom of navigation," the ministry stated, accusing Brussels of abusing international legal norms.
