Iran Halts Gas Supply to Türkiye After Strike

Iran has suspended natural gas shipments to Türkiye after a strike on the massive South Pars field. The duration of the disruption remains unclear, and officials have not publicly confirmed when flows may resume.

The Turkish Energy Ministry declined to comment on the development.

Despite the halt, Türkiye continues to import gas from its primary suppliers, including Russia and Azerbaijan. The country is also relying on existing gas storage reserves to manage supply needs.

In 2024, Iran accounted for approximately 13% of Türkiye’s natural gas imports, totaling around 7 billion cubic meters, according to official data.

The South Pars field, the world’s largest natural gas reserve, plays a crucial role in Iran’s domestic energy production and export capacity. The facility was targeted in an Israeli strike on March 18, intensifying tensions in the region.

Following the attack, Iran launched retaliatory strikes on energy infrastructure in Gulf countries, including facilities in Qatar.

The escalation triggered a sharp rise in global gas prices, which reached their highest levels in more than three years before easing as attacks on infrastructure subsided.

Analysts warn that continued disruptions could increase volatility in global energy markets, particularly if supply constraints persist.

Türkiye maintains significant gas reserves, with storage capacity reported at 6.3 billion cubic meters. The country’s daily consumption averages around 230 million cubic meters, according to energy regulators.

These reserves are expected to provide a buffer against short-term supply disruptions.

Iran also temporarily reduced gas exports to Iraq following the strike, though flows have partially resumed. Historically, Iran has occasionally cut gas supplies to Türkiye during peak winter demand due to domestic consumption pressures.
