How US Army Funding Led to China Conquering Robot Dogs Market
Breakthroughs funded by the US Army provided the architectural foundation for Chinese firm Unitree Robotics to dominate the global quadruped robotics industry, exposing widening gaps in Western commercialization.

The technological blueprints underpinning China’s commercial dominance in quadruped robotics originated in U.S. military-funded laboratories.
Hangzhou-based Unitree Robotics, which is preparing for a $9 billion initial public offering in Shanghai, constructed its market-leading Go series of four-legged robots by leveraging open-access research bankrolled by the U.S. Army.
Architectural Parallels
Between 2010 and 2020, the U.S. Army Research Laboratory directed the Robotics Collaborative Technology Alliance, a defense consortium spanning MIT, the University of Pennsylvania, and defense contractor General Dynamics Land Systems.
American researchers revolutionized quadruped locomotion by eliminating cumbersome central gearboxes and integrating custom actuators directly into robotic limbs, culminating in MIT’s high-agility Mini Cheetah in 2019.
Unitree founder Wang Xingxing cited these American military-backed studies in his academic thesis before replicating the architecture at scale.
Ben Katz, who designed MIT's actuators, observed that the physical dimensions of Unitree’s popular Go series were “to the millimeter” almost identical to the Mini Cheetah platform.
Industrial Asymmetry
While the U.S. prioritized fundamental science and openly shared findings to advance academic research, domestic venture capital prioritized high-margin software over hardware commercialization.
China leveraged state-backed industrial policy, deep domestic component clusters, and low-margin manufacturing ecosystems to rapidly convert American theoretical breakthroughs into cheap, mass-market hardware.
Unitree delivered over 18,000 quadrupeds and 5,500 humanoid units last year alone, spearheaded by its $1,600 Go2 model.
In contrast, U.S. rival Ghost Robotics, founded by UPenn researchers to supply American special forces, operates at a much higher cost and lower volume.
The Army-funded initiative ultimately yielded “basically, the first Unitree robot that had any kind of scale,” noted Gavin Kenneally, co-founder of Ghost Robotics.
Strategic Implications
The disparity has created acute security dilemmas in Washington, leading the Pentagon to designate Unitree as a Chinese military company despite the firm's claims of producing civilian hardware.
The operational shortfall of domestic alternatives reached the point where the U.S. Army sought procurement waivers in 2023 to acquire Unitree Go2 units, citing an absence of American products of comparable quality and scale.
“This isn't just a competition between U.S. and Chinese robotics companies,” Kenneally remarked. “It's between private U.S. companies and China’s coordinated national strategy.”
