Ibrahim Traore, Burkina Faso's military ruler, has launched a sweeping domestic offensive against what he terms “radical Islam,” sharply escalating a confrontation with the country's influential religious scholars.
Addressing Muslim leaders directly, the junta chief warned that the state will actively target those pushing extremist doctrines. "If this is your Islam, we will fight it. Extremists must change. If they do not, the battle has begun," Traore said.
The aggressive rhetoric marks a pivotal shift in the Sahel nation's internal politics.
Traore accused foreign powers of weaponizing religion to destabilize his government while promising state backing for clerics who preach a peaceful doctrine, according to The New Arab.
Sweeping Religious Decrees
At the core of the dispute is the Religious Freedoms Law, unanimously passed by the transitional parliament on June 20.
The legislation mandates strict financial transparency for religious groups and imposes prison sentences for abuses such as forced child begging.
Traore defended the controversial measure as a necessary tool to preserve Burkina Faso’s secular constitution. He cautioned that authorities will suspend any imams utilizing sermons to propagate extremist ideology.
The government is also tightening its grip on foreign religious instruction. Traore decreed that Burkinabe nationals studying Islamic theology abroad must return home or face the revocation of their citizenship.
Moving forward, students seeking overseas education will require explicit authorization from the Ministry of Higher Education.
High-Profile Arrests
The junta's rhetoric has been matched by swift crackdowns on prominent religious figures.
In late May, security forces arrested Mohamed Ishaq Kindo, a leading Sunni scholar, following his public criticism of the impending religious legislation.
Kindo’s detention triggered public demands for his release, prompting the government to shutter Ouagadougou’s largest Sunni mosque over purported public order concerns.
Following the protests, approximately 100 supporters were relocated to a military base for what state officials termed "civic training," according to AFP.
The Dakar-based Timbuktu Institute reports that Kindo’s current whereabouts remain unknown. His capture mirrors the mid-April detention of Imam Mahmoud Barro in Bobo-Dioulasso.
Shifting Alliances
Security analysts warn the crackdown dismantles a delicate alliance. Traore previously relied on influential Muslim scholars to cement the junta's legitimacy after seizing power in 2022.
Alienating these former domestic allies introduces severe political risks as the administration struggles to contain a relentless, multi-year jihadist insurgency.
Concurrently, Ouagadougou is aggressively recalibrating its foreign security partnerships. Traore recently accepted the diplomatic credentials of Simon Seroussi, Israel’s new ambassador, resolving an accreditation delay that lasted for months.
The diplomatic milestone aligns with a broader regional strategy. Israeli intelligence and security agencies are actively expanding cooperation with the Alliance of Sahel States—a military bloc comprising Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger.
Regional military governments have indicated a strong interest in acquiring Israeli security technology to counter domestic threats.
