US Sanctions Palestinian Leaders Over Peace Violations

The State Department imposed visa sanctions on the Palestinian Authority and PLO for “supporting terrorism” and violating peace commitments.

The State Department stated that the PA and PLO are not in compliance with the PLO Commitments Compliance Act of 1989 and the Middle East Peace Commitments Act of 2002. It accused the groups of continuing to support terrorism and undermining prospects for a negotiated peace. "It is in our national security interests to impose consequences," the department noted, signaling a renewed emphasis on holding Palestinian leaders accountable for their actions in international forums.

The sanctions align with Trump’s intensified rhetoric on Gaza, where humanitarian conditions continue to deteriorate. The administration has opposed international legal action against Israeli officials and expressed frustration at European moves to elevate Palestinian diplomatic status.

Recognition Efforts And Trump’s Gaza Messaging

France has already stated it will recognize a Palestinian state at the upcoming General Assembly, with Canada and the UK expected to follow. It remains unclear whether President Mahmoud Abbas or other senior PA officials will be permitted entry to attend.

While Trump acknowledged “real starvation” in Gaza earlier this week, he insisted that the solution lies in Hamas surrendering. His envoy, Steve Witkoff, visited Israel on the day of the sanctions to assess humanitarian efforts and meet Prime Minister Netanyahu.

Analysts suggest the timing of the sanctions may reflect coordination with right-wing elements in the Israeli government. Critics warn it could hinder post-war governance discussions, deepen divisions among U.S. allies, and further isolate Palestinian leadership on the world stage.
