Chinese trade official Li Chenggang confirmed the truce extension at a press conference in Stockholm, stating that both nations would “continue to maintain close communication” and “push for the stable and sound development” of their trade relationship. He noted that the Stockholm meeting reviewed the progress of earlier agreements reached in Geneva and London.

While specific details of the new pause were not disclosed, the announcement suggests that both countries are seeking to avoid further escalation amid wider global economic uncertainty. U.S. President Donald Trump had earlier threatened to impose unilateral tariffs on countries not reaching agreements with Washington by August 1, although China was granted a longer deadline.

The U.S.–China tariff conflict has had far-reaching implications for global supply chains since its escalation in previous years. While both sides rolled back some levies, tensions have periodically resurfaced, prompting a series of high-level meetings. Trump’s administration has secured partial trade deals with the U.K., EU, Japan, and others, while maintaining pressure on major exporters like China.

In Stockholm, officials reiterated their intent to keep dialogue open and avoid disruption. “Both sides are fully aware of the importance of safeguarding a stable and sound China-U.S. trade economic relationship,” Li said.

The outcome marks another step in an ongoing negotiation process, with further talks expected as both nations seek to formalize a long-term trade arrangement.
