A new boat from the "Freedom Flotilla" has set sail from Sicily towards Gaza, in a renewed attempt to challenge Israel’s ongoing blockade. The vessel, the Handala, left Syracuse carrying activists and humanitarian supplies, continuing the efforts of the international movement to deliver aid and show solidarity with Palestinians amid Gaza’s deepening humanitarian crisis.
Renewed Effort to Break Gaza Blockade
The Handala left Syracuse on July 13 with 15 activists onboard, including members of European civil society organizations. The mission comes six weeks after the previous attempt by the Madleen, which was intercepted by Israeli forces. The activists aim to deliver medical equipment, food, and supplies for children to Gaza, where over 20 months of war have left the population facing catastrophic shortages.
The organizers, including French coordinator Claude Léostic, said the mission is driven by a desire to “bring international solidarity to Gaza’s people.” French parliamentarians Gabrielle Cathala and Emma Fourreau are expected to join the ship during a stop in Gallipoli, Italy. “This mission is for the children of Gaza, to break the humanitarian blockade and break the summer silence over this genocide,” Cathala saidEn route vers Gaza, un ….
A Symbolic Journey with Political Impact
The Freedom Flotilla’s latest voyage underscores the continued defiance of Israel’s naval blockade, which has tightened since the start of its offensive in October 2023. Israel’s restrictions have led to severe shortages of food, medicine, and essential goods in Gaza. The activists argue that if Israel blocks the Handala’s mission, it will mark yet another violation of international law.
This voyage mirrors past flotilla efforts, notably the 2010 Mavi Marmara incident, but organizers stress their peaceful intentions. Public support gathered at the port with calls of “Free Palestine” highlighted the growing frustration with international inaction.
