The letter, signed by leading Israeli security veterans such as Tamir Pardo, Efraim Halevy, Danny Yatom, and former army chiefs including Ehud Barak and Moshe Yaalon, emphasized that military action had accomplished what force alone could achieve. It argued that the most urgent remaining objective—bringing Israeli hostages home—could only be achieved diplomatically.

Ayalon, speaking in a video released alongside the letter, warned that the prolonged war “is leading the State of Israel to lose its security and identity.” The authors called on Trump to help facilitate a transition by promoting a regional coalition to support a reformed Palestinian Authority in governing Gaza, replacing Hamas.

Rising Domestic Opposition To Prolonged Military Campaign

The message reflects growing dissent within Israel’s security establishment over Prime Minister Netanyahu’s continued military approach. Some ministers in Netanyahu’s coalition have advocated for a full occupation of Gaza, despite international pressure for a ceasefire and concerns over civilian casualties.

The letter positions Trump as uniquely influential among Israeli society, appealing to him to mediate a resolution. Signatories expressed hope that U.S. leadership could catalyze a diplomatic path forward, stabilize the region, and enable the return of Israeli hostages held in Gaza.
