EU leaders, along with counterparts from the United Kingdom, Norway, Germany, France, Italy, Poland, Finland, and Denmark, expressed strong support for Trump’s stance on ending the war. They underscored that the US position aligns with the objective of stopping hostilities immediately and establishing conditions for meaningful negotiations.
Strong Support for Trump’s Approach
European leaders, including the United Kingdom, Norway, Germany, France, Italy, Poland, Finland, and Denmark, expressed strong support for Trump’s stance on ending the war. Eleven leaders, including UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, signed the statement highlighting that the conflict must stop immediately and the current frontlines should serve as the foundation for negotiations. The statement aligns with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenski’s position, which calls for talks to begin with the stabilization of existing battle lines.
Warning on Russia’s Intentions
The statement also warned that Russia is not serious about achieving peace. Leaders emphasized that Ukraine remains the only side genuinely committed to ending the conflict. “It is clear that (Russian President Vladimir) Putin continues to choose violence and destruction,” the announcement said. Meanwhile, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov rejected the idea of halting the conflict along current frontlines, suggesting that freezing the front would only result in a temporary ceasefire and claiming Moscow seeks a “long-term, sustainable peace.”
Strengthening Ukraine’s Position
European leaders stressed the importance of ensuring Ukraine is in the strongest possible position before, during, and after any potential ceasefire. They noted the need to maintain pressure on Russia’s economy and defense industry until Moscow demonstrates readiness for peace. Measures are being planned to utilize the full value of frozen Russian state assets to provide Ukraine with critical resources.
Upcoming Coordination Meetings
To further progress on these efforts, the leaders announced they will meet this week during the European Council session and in the “Volunteers Coalition” format to discuss ways to increase support for Ukraine and implement planned measures.
