Local leaders and residents immediately disavowed the plan. Activist Issa Amro described the figures named in the report as “anonymous” and lacking political or social standing. “This isn’t journalism—it’s inventing Palestinian ‘leaders’ to fit an artificial narrative,” he said.

Family, Political Leadership Denounce Initiative

The Jaabari family issued a formal statement rejecting the plan, clarifying that it does not represent their views or those of the broader community. “The Jaabari family has always been – and remains – part of the Palestinian national fabric, justly struggling for freedom and independence,” the statement read.

They also accused Wadee' al-Jaabari of acting for personal business interests and having ties with Israeli institutions. Local officials and clan leaders confirmed they were unfamiliar with the individuals listed as authors and reiterated that they hold no recognized authority.

Media Criticism And Broader Implications

Issa Amro and others criticized the Wall Street Journal article for failing to verify sources and disregarding Hebron’s established political structures. The story has been widely seen in Hebron as misinformation, emerging amid broader regional tensions and sensitive political discourse on Palestinian self-determination.

At present, there is no indication that the proposal has received traction beyond the reported letter.
