Civilians across Sudan are again bearing the brunt of an intensifying war, as the UN reports fresh drone strikes, widening sieges and new displacement across Darfur and Kordofan.
The warning follows a deadly market attack in North Darfur and mounting pressure around El Fasher, where aid groups describe a deepening catastrophe.
Escalation From Darfur To Kordofan
Briefing reporters in New York, the UN spokesperson said fighting had “escalated” in North and West Darfur, with drone strikes and clashes in several areas.
“On Sunday, a drone attack on Sarf Omra’s main market in North Darfur reportedly killed at least seven civilians. Strikes in El Geneina, the capital of West Darfur, also caused casualties,” he said.
Displacement Surges Around El Fasher
The UN cited new displacement of more than 3,000 people in North Darfur last week alone, including 1,500 from El Fasher and 1,500 from Abu Gamra amid renewed fighting.
Separate humanitarian updates say El Fasher’s siege has driven a sharp rise in displacement to nearby towns and worsened hunger.
Kordofan Under Strain As Routes Are Cut
Tensions are “rising sharply” in Kordofan, with nearly 1,000 people displaced from Lagawa town on Saturday due to insecurity.
In South Kordofan, Dilling and Kadugli remain under siege, supply routes cut and shortages of basics worsening by the day, according to UN updates and operational plans.
Aid Access And A Plea To Protect Civilians
Despite severe constraints, humanitarian teams are still delivering assistance where access is possible.
“We call for the immediate cessation of hostilities, for the protection of civilians, and unimpeded humanitarian access to all those in need,” the UN spokesperson said.
