An Israeli official told Reuters on Thursday that the two-day suspension was ordered “to allow the military time to develop a new plan” after reports emerged of masked men aboard aid trucks. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defence Minister Israel Katz demanded a plan to prevent Hamas from accessing civilian aid, citing unspecified new intelligence.
While aid reportedly continues to enter from southern Gaza, a UN source confirmed that all deliveries to the north had been put on hold. The UN’s Palestinian refugee agency (UNRWA) declined to comment.
Gaza Clans Reject Hamas Accusations
Responding to Israel's allegations, the Higher Commission for Tribal Affairs in Gaza stated that local clans — not Hamas — had organized protection of aid convoys. "The trucks were protected as part of an aid security process managed solely through tribal efforts," the commission said. Hamas also denied involvement.
Amjad al-Shawa, director of a Palestinian NGO umbrella group, said aid escorted by clans was being distributed to vulnerable families. “The clans came to prevent the aggressors and thieves from stealing the food that belongs to our people,” said Abu Salman Al Moghani, a clan representative.
Political Pressure and Election Context
Former Prime Minister Naftali Bennett shared the video of armed and masked men aboard trucks, claiming it showed Hamas control. The footage has intensified internal political pressure on Netanyahu, particularly from far-right members of his coalition threatening to quit over ceasefire efforts and ongoing aid deliveries.
Heavy Toll and Worsening Crisis
More than 56,000 Palestinians — mostly civilians — have been killed in the Israeli assault on Gaza since October 7, 2023. Thousands more are believed to remain under rubble. The conflict has displaced the majority of Gaza's 2 million residents, while aid warehouses continue to be looted by desperate civilians.
Local health officials reported at least 118 Palestinian deaths by Israeli fire since Wednesday, including people shot near aid distribution points.
