In a joint declaration on Sunday, BRICS leaders voiced “grave concern” over the situation in Gaza and the broader region. The group condemned Israeli and US airstrikes on Iranian territory following Israel’s military campaign launched on June 13, which culminated in US strikes nine days later.
The statement emphasized that such actions violate international law and the UN Charter, urging a permanent and unconditional ceasefire and the release of all hostages. Israeli officials deny obstructing humanitarian aid to Gaza, a point also highlighted by the BRICS declaration.
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa said the attacks on Iran raised serious legal concerns and reaffirmed BRICS’ call for diplomatic resolutions.
Criticism Of Global Military And Trade Trends
BRICS leaders also raised concerns about the rise in defense spending worldwide, indirectly criticizing NATO policies promoted by US President Donald Trump. The bloc further denounced the use of unilateral tariffs and non-tariff measures, stating that such actions distort global trade and breach World Trade Organization rules.
Although the statement avoided directly naming the US, it reflected ongoing tensions between BRICS members and Washington-led global policies.
Push For UN Reform And Global South Representation
Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, hosting the summit, reiterated calls to reform the UN Security Council to better reflect the Global South’s interests. The BRICS bloc—recently expanded to include Iran, Egypt, UAE, Indonesia, and Ethiopia—continues to assert itself as an alternative power center to Western-led institutions.
President Ramaphosa concluded, “We must continue to advocate for diplomatic efforts to de-escalate tensions and ensure lasting peace.”
