Authorities imposed bans on rallies and tightened security nationwide on October 26, one day before the Constitutional Council’s scheduled October 27 results announcement. Regional officials confirmed multiple fatalities in Douala and arrests in Garoua and Yaoundé, as opposition groups defied prohibitions and accused the government of suppressing dissent.
Protest Ban And Street Clashes
At least four people were killed in Douala as demonstrators confronted police and gendarmes. Security units deployed tear gas, water cannons, and warning shots to disperse thousands gathered near administrative buildings. Local hospitals reported dozens of injuries among civilians and police alike.
Rival Claims And Timeline
Tchiroma said he won 54.8% of the vote, while preliminary figures suggest President Paul Biya, in power since 1982, secured another term. The Constitutional Council is expected to declare the final tally on October 27 after rejecting opposition complaints of irregularities.
Arrests And Internet Restrictions
More than 20 protesters were charged with “incitement to rebellion” and “insurrection” under Cameroon’s anti-terror legislation. Authorities confirmed temporary internet disruptions between October 22 and 23 in Douala and Garoua, citing “technical failures.”
Opposition Leaders Targeted
Two senior figures in Tchiroma’s campaign were detained in Douala on October 24. Protesters said security forces attempted to surround Tchiroma’s residence, prompting spontaneous sit-ins in the capital and northern cities.
Power And Discontent
Biya’s 43-year rule has faced mounting opposition amid economic stagnation and youth unemployment exceeding 30%. The protests mark the most serious challenge to his authority since the 2018 election unrest.
