The United States is stepping up pressure on Iran over its response to protests, placing new sanctions on vessels and companies linked to Tehran. Statements from the State and Treasury Departments indicate that the measures focus on disrupting Iran’s energy-related logistics and financial networks.
State Department: Aim Is to Cut Funding
In a written statement, the U.S. State Department said the sanctions were imposed to cut off funds used by the Iranian government “to repress protesters.” The statement noted that Iran-linked vessels and companies were transporting oil and petroleum products to international markets.
Nine Vessels and Eight Companies Listed
According to the U.S. administration, nine vessels and eight associated companies operating in countries such as India, Oman, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) carried Iranian oil and petroleum products worth hundreds of millions of dollars. These entities were added to the sanctions list.
Treasury Department: Internet Shutdowns Also Cited
In a separate statement, the U.S. Treasury Department said the new sanctions were also justified by Tehran’s “brutal repression of peaceful protesters” and its shutdown of internet access to conceal violations against the Iranian people.
Message of Increased Pressure
Washington emphasized that pressure on Tehran will intensify due to the killing of protesters, underlining that the latest sanctions target Iran’s economic and logistical capacity.
