India Successfully Tests Astra Missile With 100+ Km Range

DRDO and the Indian Air Force tested the Astra air-to-air missile from a Su-30 Mk-I fighter on July 11 off Odisha’s coast.

Developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), the Astra missile was launched from a Su-30 Mk-I fighter jet. The system features a domestically produced radio frequency (RF) seeker for guidance and targeting. During the test, Astra demonstrated high accuracy against fast-moving aerial targets under varied range and angle conditions.

According to DRDO, the RF seeker and integrated guidance systems were entirely developed in India, involving multiple DRDO labs and over 50 public and private sector partners, including Hindustan Aeronautics Limited.

The missile has a strike range of over 100 kilometers and is considered vital for India’s air dominance strategy.

National Recognition For Indigenous Achievement

India’s Defence Minister Rajnath Singh praised the success, calling it “a milestone in critical defense technology.” DRDO Chairman Dr. Samir V. Kamat also congratulated the teams involved in the development and testing phases.

The performance was verified using range tracking systems deployed at the Integrated Test Range in Chandipur. This marks one of several efforts by the Indian defense sector to reduce dependency on foreign missile systems and enhance indigenous capabilities.
