Pope Leo XIV, who became pope in June, chose Türkiye for his inaugural international visit. The journey coincides with the 1,700th anniversary of the Council of Nicaea, a defining moment in early Christian history.

The pontiff visited Anıtkabir, the mausoleum of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, where he said, “I thank God that I could visit Türkiye, and I wish peace and abundant prosperity to this country and its people.” Walking along the Lion’s Road, Pope Leo paid respects and laid a wreath.

Erdoğan and Pope Meet for Bilateral Talks

After the official welcome, Erdoğan and Pope Leo held a 30-minute private meeting at the Presidential Complex. Discussions focused on deepening Türkiye-Vatican relations, regional developments including Israel’s actions in Gaza, and broader global concerns.

Erdoğan stated, “The Pope’s visit to Türkiye is a meaningful occasion that highlights our shared values.” He also emphasized, “We do not allow a single one of our citizens to be subjected to discrimination,” and addressed ongoing conflicts:

The Israeli government has been bombing civilian settlements for months, including churches, mosques, hospitals, and schools. One of the houses of worship targeted by Israel was the only Catholic church in Gaza, the Holy Family Church. I take this opportunity to convey my best wishes to them once again.

Leaders Emphasize Peace and Religious Harmony

Speaking at a joint press conference, Pope Leo said, “This country has inseparable ties with the origins of Christianity. A society is vibrant if it has pluralism. Yet today, human communities are increasingly polarized and divided. Christians are also part of your country.” He further added,

In a society like Türkiye, where religion plays a central role, it is very important to protect the dignity of all of God’s children. We are all God’s children. Those whose hearts are open to God’s will encourage the common good and respect for everyone.

Global Peace Messages and Future Cooperation

Erdoğan highlighted interfaith cooperation and restoration efforts, stating, “People of every religion and sect have lived in peace for a thousand years. Churches and synagogues stand side by side. Since 2002, we have completed the restoration of many churches.”

On global issues and moral responsibility, Pope Leo criticized individualism and materialism, saying, “The future of humanity is at risk. The resources absorbed by this destructive dynamic are being diverted from fighting hunger and poverty and addressing the challenges facing the human family today.”

Both leaders framed the visit as reinforcing long-standing diplomatic and spiritual relations. Erdoğan concluded, “We are putting our hand under the stone for peace.” Pope Leo emphasized, “May Türkiye serve as a source of stability and reconciliation among peoples in the service of just and lasting peace.
