Conservative commentator Tucker Carlson has publicly announced his departure from the Republican Party, ending 35 years of consistent defense for the political affiliation.
Speaking on the podcast "Can't Be Censored," the former Fox News Channel host declared there is no chance he will support the party ahead of the November midterm elections.
Carlson branded the Republican Party as "treasonous" and "immoral," accusing its leadership of making national decisions based on the criteria of corporate donors and Israel rather than American citizens.
Divergence Over the Iran War
The disillusionment driving Carlson’s exit was supercharged by President Donald Trump’s decision to go to war with Iran in February.
The commentator has repeatedly criticized the conflict, stating it is fought at the behest of Israel at the expense of Americans, and attacked the party for failing to represent its nation and voters.
Having supported Trump in 2024, Carlson apologized for campaigning for the presidential candidate and for misleading people, stating that the deception was unintentional.
He suggested his defection should serve as a wake-up call for the party, noting that recent polling indicates the war in Iran is deeply unpopular.
White House Rejection
President Trump responded to the criticisms by stating that Carlson has lost his way and is no longer part of the MAGA movement.
A White House spokesman added that national security decisions are not based on fluid opinion polls or podcast hosts.
Carlson, who has amassed a large following on his own podcast since being fired from Fox News in 2023, stated he would also not support the Democratic Party, leaving his future political alignment uncertain.
He warned that his exit could signal a wider departure of disillusioned voters from the Republican base.
