Türkiye's Layered Air Defense System Hits Milestone with Successful Live-Fire Test
Türkiye's long-range air defense system, SIPER 2, achieved full operational capability after successfully intercepting a high-speed maneuvering target. The milestone accelerates domestic production and reinforces the top layer of the national air defense framework.

Türkiye's long-range regional air and missile defense system, SIPER 2, successfully intercepted a high-speed maneuvering target during its latest live-fire test.
The milestone marks a major expansion in domestic defensive capabilities, with the platform now achieving full operational capability.
Technical Achievements and Upgrades
Developed through a joint consortium of ASELSAN, ROKETSAN, and TUBITAK SAGE, SIPER 2 represents the upper layer of Türkiye's national, layered air defense framework.
The platform is designed to engage a broad array of airborne threats, including fighter jets, cruise missiles, air-to-ground munitions, strategic unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), and helicopters.
The system operates on a distributed architecture and introduces significant performance upgrades over its predecessor.
While SIPER 1 features a maximum interception range of over 70 kilometers, SIPER 2 extends its operational engagement envelope past 150 kilometers, reaching interception altitudes of approximately 30 kilometers.
During the latest live-fire evaluation, the system engaged and destroyed a Super Simsek target executing complex flight maneuvers. According to the Ministry of National Defense, the successful interception validates that the system has achieved full operational readiness.
Industrial Impact and System Integration
The successful test clears the path for ongoing serial production as domestic defense firms look to integrate the system into Türkiye's broader "Celik Kubbe" (Steel Dome) architecture.
System capabilities include autonomous air defense planning, recognized air picture generation, threat evaluation, and identification friend or foe (IFF) protocols.
At the battery level, SIPER 2 integrates multi-target and multi-radar data fusion alongside bi-directional missile communication and an active radar seeker head.
A single battery can track up to 100 targets simultaneously, engage 10 distinct threats concurrently, and guide up to 20 interceptor missiles.
Procurement and Long-Term Scale
The project's operational advancement coincides with a significant capital commitment in the domestic defense market.
ASELSAN confirmed the signing of a new air defense procurement contract with the Secretariat of Defense Industries (SSB) valued at 780 million euros.
Deliveries under this newly finalized procurement agreement are scheduled between 2028 and 2032.
Industrial leaders indicate that the continuous development of the SIPER program remains central to establishing self-sufficiency in high-altitude, long-range defensive capabilities.
