Italy Considers Turkish Drone After Outperforming NATO Systems

Admiral Giuseppe Berutti, Chief of Staff of Italian navy, said Italy’s is considering to buy Türkiye’s Bayraktar TB3 drone for aircraft carrier Cavour after the drone stunned NATO allies with its performance in subzero temperatures during NATO drills in 2026.

Chief of Staff of Italian Navy Admiral Giuseppe Berutti Bergotto told parliament that the Navy is examining acquisition of the TB3, citing growing focus on unmanned systems.

After reviewing footage of TB3 operations from the TCG Anadolu, he described the platform as a “somewhat complex” system capable of both surveillance and strike roles.

The potential procurement would be routed through Italy’s Leonardo under a cooperation agreement signed with Baykar, enabling integration onto the aircraft carrier Cavour.

European navies have struggled for years to field carrier-capable unmanned systems. Analyst Riccardo Gasco said, “Europe has spent years discussing carrier-capable unmanned systems without fielding one.”

He added: “Turkey already has one, it works,” pointing to the TB3 as an immediate solution to a persistent capability gap.

The TB3’s appeal was reinforced during NATO’s Steadfast Dart 2026 exercise in the Baltic Sea. The drones conducted autonomous takeoffs and landings from the TCG Anadolu in subzero conditions, while other allied aircraft were unable to operate from ships in February conditions.

The platform also carried out live-fire missile engagements during the drills, demonstrating operational readiness in contested environments.

The Bayraktar TB3 is designed for carrier operations, with a payload capacity of 280 kg and the ability to carry more than six laser-guided munitions, including air-to-ground missiles and loitering munitions.

Italy’s Cavour, which already operates F-35B fighter jets and helicopters, could integrate the TB3 to expand surveillance and strike coverage without relying solely on crewed aircraft.

Bergotto described such systems as “force multipliers,” enhancing both operational reach and situational awareness.

The Baykar-Leonardo partnership reflects a deeper industrial alignment between Türkiye and Italy, potentially influencing broader defense cooperation. Gasco noted the relationship could shape how Rome engages Ankara on wider security issues.

Indonesia became the first export customer for the TB3 in February, and a potential Italian acquisition would mark a significant validation of the platform among NATO allies.
