The IDF confirmed that its ground units have initiated a “limited ground operation” in southern Lebanon, focusing on key targets to expand Israel’s forward defense line. The move follows recent intelligence indicating threats along the northern border of Israel.
According to an official statement cited by The Times of Israel, the operation is part of efforts to destroy Hezbollah’s militant infrastructure and neutralize fighters operating in the region. “The aim is to eliminate threats and provide an additional layer of security for northern settlements,” the statement said.
IDF also reported that intense airstrikes and artillery barrages preceded the ground advance to reduce operational threats and weaken Hezbollah positions.
The 146th Reserve Division is stationed in western southern Lebanon, while the 36th Division conducted a raid in the Rab el-Thalathine area. Israeli military sources indicated the government may increase the number of reservists from 280,000 to 450,000, signaling preparations for a potentially broader ground campaign.
Ahead of the operation, southern suburbs of Beirut were heavily targeted by airstrikes, with images showing large plumes of smoke rising from Hezbollah strongholds. Lebanon’s National News Agency (NNA) confirmed multiple strikes in southern Lebanon.
The United Nations peacekeeping force reported that its patrols were fired upon, likely by non-state armed groups, though no casualties were reported. Hezbollah claimed to have carried out five attacks against Israel on Monday, following 25 strikes over the weekend targeting Israeli positions in the Golan Heights and southern Lebanon.
