Israeli Military is Building a Massive Earthen Barrier to Divide Gaza Strip

Israeli forces are accelerating the construction of an extensive earthen barrier across the Gaza Strip. The fortification physically severs the territory, cementing military control over more than half of the Palestinian enclave.

Satellite imagery reveals the rapid expansion of the berm network. More than 23 kilometers (14 miles) of the structure have been erected in recent months.

The barrier slices directly through Palestinian communities systematically demolished by the military. The structure's length now exceeds half the entire 40-kilometer coastal strip, according to AP.

Expanding the Boundary

The Israeli military confirmed to the Associated Press that a physical barrier is under construction. It follows the "yellow line," a boundary designated for an initial troop withdrawal under the October ceasefire agreement.

That demarcation was initially framed as a temporary measure pending a full Israeli withdrawal. The rapid construction now signals a long-term entrenchment.

Planet Labs PBC satellite data shows a concentrated expansion in southern Gaza.

A single section separating the destroyed city of Rafah from the Muwasi tent camps grew from 500 meters to 2.4 kilometers within the first two weeks of July.

If the current trajectory holds, this southern network will merge with a 17-kilometer unbroken stretch connecting Khan Younis to the outskirts of Gaza City.

Work on that central section began in February and continues to push south.

Demolition and Security Zones

The military operates a fortified "security zone" surrounding the barrier. Officials confirmed the integration of intelligence and technological assets along the route, declining to specify its ultimate reach.

Palestinians remain largely unaware of the barrier's scale due to the lethal risks of approaching the militarized zone.

East of the yellow line, Israeli forces have deployed bulldozers and explosives to level civilian infrastructure.

Entire towns, including vast sections of Rafah, have been erased to make way for new military road networks and bases.

Agricultural lands have also been systematically destroyed. The Israeli military stated it aims to clearly mark the boundary to “reduce friction and prevent harm to uninvolved individuals.”

Lethal Enforcement

Enforcement of the unmarked boundary has proven deadly. Israeli forces have routinely fired on Palestinians approaching or crossing the line, killing children and civilians.

Soldiers indicate they operate under standing orders to shoot anyone breaching the boundary.

Since the October ceasefire commenced, Israeli airstrikes and drone operations have killed over 1,100 Palestinians. During the same period, militant attacks killed five Israeli soldiers.

Diplomatic Stagnation

The barrier's expansion coincides with a frozen diplomatic process. The October agreement mandated an eventual Israeli withdrawal to the edges of Gaza, transferring control to an international security force.

Neither U.S. Central Command, which monitors the ceasefire, nor the Board of Peace led by U.S. President Donald Trump commented on the barrier's construction.

A former U.N. diplomat overseeing the ceasefire coordination cited Hamas’s failure to disarm as the primary obstacle.

Talks regarding weapons decommissioning remain stalled, while Hamas accuses Israel of consistently violating the truce parameters.

The broader Israeli military offensive has killed more than 73,000 Palestinians, according to reliable data from the Gaza Health Ministry.

The war began following the October 7 Hamas-led attacks, which killed approximately 1,200 people and captured 251 hostages.
