According to Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, Putin used the meeting to outline Russia’s grievances about Western arms deliveries to Ukraine and alleged attacks on Russian territory. While the Kremlin did not confirm any concessions, Russian officials suggested that a temporary reduction in airstrikes or limited territorial withdrawals could be on the table—if sanctions are avoided.
Witkoff’s visit represents the highest-level diplomatic contact between the Trump administration and Russia since renewed hostilities erupted last year. Trump has sought to balance geopolitical pressure with economic stability, warning that oil sanctions could spike global prices and hurt U.S. consumers.
Despite the Kremlin’s positive tone, the talks have fueled anxiety among U.S. allies. NATO officials and Ukrainian leaders are concerned that Witkoff’s engagement may undercut multilateral diplomacy or result in one-sided concessions favoring Moscow. Kyiv has not been included in these direct discussions, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has reiterated demands that any deal must include a full Russian withdrawal.
European officials also questioned Trump’s leverage, noting that Russia may try to delay or dilute commitments until after the deadline. “This meeting may be a useful step,” said one EU diplomat, “but it’s not a resolution.”
The Trump administration has not disclosed whether additional envoys will travel to Kyiv or Brussels ahead of the deadline, but sources say discussions are ongoing within the White House to prepare contingency measures should Putin fail to de-escalate.
