The United States said it carried out precision strikes against ISIS militants in Sokoto state, acting at the request of Nigeria’s government.
U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) said the operation was coordinated with Nigerian authorities and targeted known militant camps.
U.S. President Donald Trump said the U.S. military executed “powerful and deadly” strikes, describing ISIS militans as a direct threat to civilians in the region. Nigerian officials confirmed the action was a joint operation and emphasized that it was not linked to any religious targeting.
Intelligence Flights and Military Assets
The strikes followed weeks of U.S. intelligence-gathering flights over large parts of Nigeria, according to U.S. officials.
The Pentagon released unclassified footage showing at least one missile launched from a U.S. military vessel, while defense officials said multiple militants were hit.
Nigeria’s foreign ministry said the operation reflected structured security cooperation with international partners, adding that it had resulted in precision hits on terrorist targets in the northwest.
Political Sensitivities and Messaging
Washington has framed the operation as part of a broader campaign against ISIS networks, while Nigerian authorities stressed national sovereignty and coordination.
Nigeria’s government has repeatedly said militant violence affects both Muslims and Christians, pushing back against simplified narratives.
The strikes come as Nigeria continues to battle jihadist groups across multiple regions, including Boko Haram and ISIS affiliates, which have carried out attacks for more than a decade.
